We have been down the road of addiction and struggled our way through quitting and giving up our addiction. I loved the smell of other peoples burning cigarettes but immediately tell them all the reasons they should quit. Jealousy that they could still do the drug I had given up…. So for me being an addict yep I said it , dating a smoker was supposed to be a rule breaker… until I met this guy.. I told him how I had quit and I think around this time he just gave up trying and started smoking , only not around me. This was ok with me because as an addict when your drug of choice is in front of you, you have trouble not picking it up. After a few more weeks and all of my friends in my backyard at a BBQ, I noticed almost every single person was smoking including my best friend who had never smoked she had just started an ugly divorce. It burned my mouth and taste buds, all the way down my throat and made me cough.. It was horrible.. I gave him his cigarette feeling like I remembered why I quit… but the following day, about 18 hours after that puff, I suddenly felt rage, anger, bitterness, frustration and more without any kind of reason or stimulation.

Being a non-smoker and someone who is not a big fan of second hand smoke, one would think I would avoid dating smokers. After almost 4 years on the dating apps and having met now almost women, I learned quite a long time ago to not rule out women who smoke. Let me explain. I came to this conclusion as there are frankly a fair amount of very nice women who just happen to have the bad habit of smoking.
What I have found is that most of the women I met that were smokers, knew it was bad and either had tried to quit or wanted to quit.

I was 7 years old the first time I visited New York City. I do, however, remember holding my breath while walking around Manhattan. I grew up in a Los Angeles suburb, and no one smoked. No one on the street did. Then I went to a small liberal arts school 90 miles north of New York City. The college was filled with queers, art history majors and brooding, pretentious intellectuals.
Needless to say, everyone I met smoked. If you were extra misunderstood as an artist, you rolled your own cigarettes. It smelled gross. And in the middle of winter, you have to leave your warm bed to smoke outside in the snow.

“Tell the truth. Smoking is a deal breaker for a lot of people. I put it on par with having a kid and hiding it. You don’t want to.
I’d been doing a lot of dating, in bursts and for a few weeks or months at a time, when I met Johnny. There are many stories to tell about him, about hiding away in the suburbs with him and how he led me to music I’d never heard or long forgotten and the many habits he tucked away from me that I tried to hard to pretend not to see. But this story is about smoking, and about how he tried to quit, about what I learned about smokers by being with him. Johnny was a news editor – I imagine he still is – and we got each other’s talents.
He was funny and still could club like I did decades earlier. I loved his style and I bit my tongue from correcting his grammar. He was a single father who adored his girls, who wanted very much to be in love and grow a family. I got that. But still, there was too much from his life, too many half-told stories, too many skips in the record for me to trust him completely.

Smoking may be a deal-breaker when it comes to dating, but what if I’ve never dated a smoker because I never liked a guy who did smoke.
After several failed relationships, I finally found someone who is all the things you say that a real man should be. The only problem is that he smokes. He is too, but his smoking is the only issue we keep arguing about. He says he is trying to kick the habit for me, but he has failed to do so and it seems he smokes even more after each failed attempt. The other day he told me that he has already started looking for a house for us and that he plans to marry me next year and wants to start a family a year later.
He has been working overtime at his job to make this happen and every month he shows me his bank statement. What should I do? Your advice is much appreciated. Glad to hear that your self-help has been self-helping you to attract better quality men. The more dealbreakers you have, the fewer relationship options you have.

Dear Mr. Manners: I’m a smoker – I know, I know, I need to quit. I’ve been working on it, I promise. Love Stories is a series about love in all its forms, with one new essay appearing each day for the first two weeks of February, until Valentine’s Day. It started out like lots of bad romances, by which I mean that from the very beginning, I knew every single reason why not, and I went ahead and did it anyway. Not that I would admit any of those things. New York was broken up into its own little sects and small republics, its dictatorships and dividing lines, and smoking was one of the few that I chose rather than have chosen for me—it was the box that I ticked myself.
Plus, when I was a party reporter, relatively new in town and with distinctly unusual hours, it helped me talk to any and everybody; it was the perfect segue to approach the movie star, who, when made to stand outside their own premiere, like you, like anybody , was neutralized, made human. It was the only vaguely socially acceptable reason to duck out of a dull dinner and find the people you actually wanted to talk to.
